Biography

Terence Round was born in London in the 1930s. He trained at Camberwell School of Art and the Central School of Art, studying fashion with illustration. He went on to become the youngest art director at the Terence Conran Design Group, and built a varied career spanning fashion photography, graphic design and furniture design before establishing himself as a painter.

Round’s portfolio as an artist is similarly varied, ranging across abstract, realist and impressionist work. His paintings capture landscapes, seascapes and skies, as well as fleeting moments in time.

Round painted his first white-on-white abstract in 1955, having come across Kazimir Malevich’s work. He works in fabric, crushed paper, glossy enamel, oil and acrylic, and his abstract pieces span black and white, greys and colour.

His work is, in his own words, about creating an atmosphere for him to live in — a mixture of texture, colour and sound that pleases the eye and ear, combined with good company, laughter, and a good red wine. He describes this as good “interior design.”

A significant body of his work is devoted to Shackleton’s Antarctic expedition. The Endurance was crushed and sank on the evening of 21 November 1915, and Round’s paintings incorporate the actual newspaper cuttings from that period. The red paint running down these cuttings represents the red fields of Flanders, referencing Shackleton’s own writing in his book South. A fourth, solitary figure often appears in the distance of these paintings, representing the presence Shackleton and his companions each independently felt had joined them during the final leg of their journey across South Georgia — an experience later known as “third man syndrome.”

Round was a member of the James Caird Society, and attended its two annual dinners at Dulwich College.
