Shackleton Series

Terence Round was a member of the James Caird Society and a significant body of his work is devoted to Shackleton’s Antarctic expedition. The Endurance was crushed and sank on the evening of 21 November 1915, and Round’s paintings incorporate the actual newspaper cuttings from that period. The red paint running down these cuttings represents the red fields of Flanders, referencing Shackleton’s own writing in his book South. A fourth, solitary figure often appears in the distance of these paintings, representing the presence Shackleton and his companions each independently felt had joined them during the final leg of their journey across South Georgia — an experience later known as “third man syndrome.”
